I always forget how much I love September weather. The days are warm, the nights are cool, late-summer flowers are in full bloom, and the foliage is just beginning to show hints of change. This past week I spent some more time at the new house. I found an amazing dresser on Facebook Marketplace, went to the garden store and bought some mums, also attempted my first Uber Eats delivery (the options aren’t as great as the city, but we’ll make it work.) I’m finally moving some furniture in next week and can’t wait to finally start to decorate, although I’ve been getting used to the bare wooden floor / yoga space vibes.

Savory S’mores

On Tuesday night I went to Wildflower Farms with a friend, a stunning hotel up in Gardiner, NY. You don’t need to be a hotel guest to visit, and the central fireplace is such a beautiful place to grab a drink and snack. I saw this video on Instagram for “savory s’mores” and needed to try it out. Luckily the hotel had a s’mores kit and a cheese board, so we ordered both and roasted cheese over the fire until melted.

It turned out to be a great success, and such a tasty alternative for those who aren’t the biggest marshmallow fans. Once I get my own fire pit set up I will be continuing this new tradition throughout the fall, so here are some more delicious combinations for campfire cheese. Rotate the cheese on a stick over the fire until soft and melty, but not too soft that it will fall into the flames!

  • Gruyère, cornichons and salami on a baguette - Gruyère is the base of fondue and an excellent melting cheese. This combination is salty, tangy and creamy.

  • Halloumi, spicy honey and mint on a baguette - Halloumi is a great grilling cheese, so over the fire you’ll be able to roast until crispy and browned.

  • Brie, chocolate and graham cracker - A soft melty slice of brie would make a great buttery pairing for the classic s’mores combination.

  • Cheddar, apples and fig jam on a graham cracker - A great autumnal pairing with a bit of cinnamon spice.

Many people were asking about my outfit, so here are the links to my sweater, jeans and shoes!

That Fallcuterie Playlist

It’s time for the return of That Fallcuterie Playlist, my favorite woodsy / folksy / acoustic playlist to put you in the autumnal mood! I added a few new favorites too. Listen below.

Upcoming Events

Tickets are going fast for our two “build your own board” workshops at Callisto Hudson Valley on September 29th and October 13th! Each class offers a detailed cheese pairing lesson featuring three artisanal cheeses, local Hudson Valley provisions, a Cheese By Numbers board-building tutorial, complementary drinks, a farm tour to meet the goats, and a chance to enjoy your personal cheese board and wine picnic-style.

We’re expected to have some stunning fall foliage this year upstate, so this is the perfect way to experience the magic!

Savory Pancakes

If savory s’mores are on the evening menu, savory pancakes are for the morning. Every year I talk about how much I love the combination of blue cheese and smoked maple syrup in the fall. It tastes like a warm hug by a campfire. This combination with crispy prosciutto and thyme is perfect. Here’s the recipe with some more tasty pairings!
